1—UNIVERSITY GRILL
7790 Cypress Lakes Drive, Fort Myers; 239-437-4377 or www.universitygrill.net.
For years, University Grill has been a hub for cocktails, steaks and seafood. It offers a nice, lengthy happy hour, 3-6:30 p.m. daily (until closing Wednesdays) and a wallet-friendly early dining menu, 3-5:15 p.m. If it’s on the menu, word is you need to try the beef on weck, (sliced prime rib, salt flakes, a caraway seed bun, horseradish and plenty of jus).
2—CHOPS CITY GRILL
8200 Health Center Blvd., Bonita Springs; 239-992-4677 or www.chopsbonita.com.
Chops has a steak menu, with no fewer than six options for American and imported Wagyu beef — “heavily discounted for your enjoyment,” according to the menu. You also can dine on traditional beef — “Chicago cut” and “cowboy” ribeye steaks, New York strip and the Porter House.
3—THE VERANDA
2122 Second St., Fort Myers; 239-332-2065 or www.verandarestaurant.com.
The Veranda has a legacy of being one of Fort Myers’ first truly “nice” restaurants. More than 40 years on, it still is a great special occasion place. You can nibble on a grilled filet mignon or chow down on a ribeye, complete with compound herb butter and onion straws. For a special occasion, you’ll want to treat yourself and someone you love to the Chateaubriand. ¦
