Fair Housing Act: Lee County has free online training for property managers and others

Property managers, developers, condo association members and real estate professionals can find free online training via Lee County’s website for improved knowledge of how to not violate the Fair Housing Act.

The website lets users make a request for training. Lee County Human Services staff will then set up the training.

Lee County’s website also contains resources on filing a complaint, questions and answers on Fair Housing, the county’s analysis of impediments to Fair Housing, and other Fair Housing resources.

Each April, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development uses Fair Housing Month to mark the passage of the 1968 Fair Housing Act, which prohibits housing discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability and family status. This year’s Fair Housing Month theme is “Fair Housing is Your Right: Use It!” Each year, HUD and communities and organizations nationwide recognize Fair Housing Month by hosting an array of activities that enhance the public’s awareness of their fair housing rights and promote the nation’s commitment to end housing discrimination.

Also this month, the public is welcome to attend the Fair Housing Summit from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, at the Dr. Carrie Robinson Center in Fort Myers.

The event — co-sponsored by the Lee County Human Services Department and the Housing Authority of the city of Fort Myers — is free of charge. It will include information on the Fair Housing Act, reasonable accommodations in rules and policies, emotional support animals, special parking requests, fair housing rights of persons with disabilities under the Fair Housing Act and Americans with Disabilities Act, and a discussion of the difference between laws and respective accessibility standards.

The Dr. Carrie Robinson Center is at 2990 Edison Ave. Attendees are asked to make reservations by contacting Sherri Campanale at 344-3247 orsherri@hacfm.org.
