The paper’s tale of the Visitor & Convention Bureau’s Shell Love Bug proved the hazards of a slow news day by occupying acres of newspaper space for a story that amounted to the chronicle of a public temper tantrum at a county commission meeting. The VCB bought the car, compensated the super-dooper Sanibel Stooper who glued the shells to the car, and was quite satisfied to let the Stooper have it in a few months’ time. But it just wasn’t soon enough! So, the Stooper and her troops came out and used the N-P for a microphone to publicize the federal case (true) they made of the issue. We were shell-shocked.
