Stylish steins designed to prevent disease
Beer steins have long been popular. Today’s stein is a beer container with a hinged lid and a handle. The lid was the result of health regulations. The bubonic plague of the 1300s, which killed more than 25 million Europeans, and an influx of flies in Europe in the 1400s led to laws that required food to be kept in covered containers. A hinged lid was added to a mug to make a stein. Full Story

Teen receives national service award
Youth Service America, a global organization that improves communities by increasing the number and diversity of young people serving in substantive roles, has named Fort Myers resident Kelly Turner as its latest Everyday Young Hero Award winner.

Students can sign up for free tutoring
Basic Learning Skills, an afterschool tutoring agency, which has its head office in Fort Myers, is reminding parents that Sept. 15 is the last day to sign up their children for free after-school tutoring. The tutorial service agency serves students in grades K through 12 from low-income families in schools over a multi-state area. Full Story
Mall gets a new play area
The Gulf Coast Town Center plans to open a child play area in early October 2011. The 2,000 square-foot play area will be located in Market Plaza and will feature structures in the shapes of an octopus, a large pirate ship and treasure chest, perfect for climbing and playing. Full Story
