Eating too much salt is a health problem today, but in past centuries salt was considered an important ingredient to be treated with reverence. Snook rules reviewed this week

Stimulus funds buy ‘green’ recycling truck
Fort Myers recently showed off its first hybrid hydraulic powered vehicle for the Public Works department. This is the first hybrid hydraulic recycling truck in Florida. The vehicle was purchased through a grant provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the use of city funds. It is a Peterbilt Model 320 equipped with Eaton Corporation’s hydraulic launch assist system. Full Story
Air-conditioning ‘cash for clunkers’ program in effect
Starting this week, Florida homeowners who upgrade their air-conditioning systems can qualify to receive a $1,500 rebate from the state. Federal stimulus money is funding the state program that is expected to benefit about 10,000 participants. The program will end on Friday, Dec. 31, or when the $15 million in rebate funds are depleted. Full Story
Harry Chapin goes hybrid
The Harry Chapin Food Bank will showcase two 24-foot hybrid refrigerated trucks, obtained through a grant from the Kresge Foundation at the Alliance for the Arts’ GreenMarket on Saturday, Sept. 11, from at 8 a.m. to noon, 10091 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers. Food bank workers are hoping to fill the trucks that day with nonperishable food donated by attendees. Full Story
HUD gives Florida $26.6 million for preventive disaster care
U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan has awarded $26.6 million to the state of Florida to reduce the human, physical and economic toll of future disasters. It’s unknown as of this writing how much of those funds will make their way to Lee County. Full Story
Edison lab gets funds for restoration
The Edison & Ford Winter Estates has been awarded a $50,000 preservation grant for restoration of the Edison Botanic Laboratory by the Florida Legislature. Full Story
