Sugar chests, pie safes once kept sweets under lock and key
Go to an antique show and you might see a pie safe, jelly cupboard or sugar chest. But most beginning collectors would call each a “cupboard” or “chest” with no idea how the furniture was originally used. A pie safe, also called a kitchen safe, is easy to identify. It is a rectangular cupboard, usually with two doors that have pierced tin panels. Full Story
Commissioner John Manning returns to former role
A former Lee County commissioner, who served on the board between 1988 and 2000, will return to his old job at a meeting on Aug. 10. Gov. Charlie Crist appointed John E. Manning of Cape Coral to fill the vacancy left by the death of Commissioner Bob Janes in March. Full Story
Local crabbers get a break by not taking one
Crabbing is a family tradition for crabber Rodney Hendrickson.
“My dad was in the business,” Mr. Hendrickson said. His brothers, nephew and grandfather were also in the business.
Mr. Hendrickson depends on catching blue crabs every day, but for 10 days every July, crabbing stops. Full Story

New school for autistic children announced
Eden Autism Services Florida, the Naples-based division of New Jersey nonprofit Eden Autism Services, is planning a school for children with autism in Fort Myers. It currently operates a school in Naples, and adult programs with facilities and group homes in Naples, Fort Myers and Cape Coral. Full Story
