Hand-painted art pottery highly valued
Art pottery was first made in the United States by a group of women in Cincinnati who had seen the pottery exhibits at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. Several groups were making pottery by the 1880s. A pottery was started in 1883 by two men: Matt Morgan, an English political cartoonist, and George Ligowsky, the inventor of the clay pigeon for target shooters. Full Story
Fiddlesticks’ Nichols Cup Tournament gives $631,000 to children’s charities
In just eight years, the Bobby Nichols Fiddlesticks Charity Foundation has raised $3,144,800 for children’s charities. This year’s Nichols Cup Celebrity Pro-Am tournament, held in February at Fiddlesticks Country Club, was an overwhelming success, enabling the foundation to present $631,000 to children’s charities. Free parenting classes to be held in Bonita Springs
If you’re among the many parents who have ever wished kids came with an instruction manual, help is on the way. The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida Child Advocacy Program is partnering with YMCA of the Palms to host a series of free parenting classes in Bonita Springs. Classes will meet every Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for eight weeks beginning April 29. Full Story

Florida Gulf Coast University’s Teacher Immersion Program in the College of Education is taking applications for the Florida teacher certification program from individuals interested in becoming K-12 classroom teachers.

Everblades hold jersey auction
The Florida Everblades will hold their annual season-ending jersey auction on Thursday, April 29, from Breakaway Sports Pub inside Germain Arena. The jersey auction is open to all fans interested in bidding on the white Everblades jerseys worn by the players during the playoffs. Full Story
HOPE Clubhouse opens doors and opportunities
Last month, a new program for people living with mental illness opened its doors to the community. The program, called HOPE Clubhouse of Southwest Florida, is a place where people who live with mental illness come to rebuild their lives. The participants, called members, not patients or consumers, focus on their strengths, and recovery not their illness. Full Story
