Coal hods find new purpose as tables, magazine racks
It’s a carrier, a hod, a scuttle, a pail. Whatever it’s called, it’s a convenient item used to carry coal to a fireplace. The word “hod” seems to be preferred in England. The term “scuttle” or “carrier” is used in the United States. Coal was used in fireplaces and stoves to provide heat. Full Story
Visitors bureau pays to keep trips carbon neutral
Lee County’s tourism agency has offset the carbon footprint of its energy use and travel for the third consecutive year of its promotional road show by donating funds to Go Zero. The program launched by The Conservation Fund intends to slow climate change and restore wildlife habitat. Full Story
Buddies help kids communicate
The Early Learning Coalition of Southwest Florida needs volunteers for the Literacy Buddies program. A Literacy Buddy agrees to receive letters from a child in an early learning facility served by the coalition. The Buddy in turn sends a letter and a high quality book to this child in response. New parking rules in downtown
Move follows streetscape completion
Visitors to the Fort Myers River District, who have enjoyed free weekday parking over the last four years while navigating the Downtown Utility Replacement and Streetscape Improvement project, will find some changes to downtown parking.

Bird patrol counts and maps winged population
The bird patrol, a group of Lee County volunteers, invites the public to join them at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 20, for a walk through Hickey’s Creek. The patrol will look for scrub jays, hawks, warblers and vireos. Participants can expect to walk about 2½ hours on well-established trails. Patrol members identify and count birds and turn their counts over to the county property managers. Full Story
