Ceremonial rattles have symbolism
A recent auction sold a 19th-century carved and painted wooden “raven rattle” made by Northwest Coast Indians. Its shape is very unusual. Ceremonial rattles like this one tell a story and are valued pieces from the past. The main part of the rattle is shaped like a bird. An Indian with a painted face or a mask is crouching on the bird’s back while holding a froglike figure. Full Story

Lake Okeechobee to host FLW Series Eastern Division Opener
The FLW Series will visit Lake Okeechobee Jan. 27-30 for the first stop of the Eastern Division circuit. Hosted by the Okeechobee County Tourism Development Council, the tournament will feature as many as 300 top bass anglers casting for top awards up to $50,000 in the Pro Division and a Ranger 177TR with a 90 horsepower engine in the Co-angler Division. Activities abound at Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve
The Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve, a Lee County Parks and Recreation facility, features a wetland preserve with a raised boardwalk that is open to the public seven days a week from dawn until dusk.
