Consumer Credit Counseling and the United Way of Lee, Hendry, and Glades have launched free tax preparation services for hard-working people and their families. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program provides free and confidential filing of tax returns by IRS certified volunteers starting this month. Full Story
Shell Factor’s Gumbo Fest benefits nonprofit foundation
The Shell Factory & Nature Park’s largest event of the year is returning this month. Now in its 10th year, Gumbo Fest will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31.
“Gumbo Fest is a fun time for a great cause,” said Tom Cronin Sr., owner of the Shell Factory. “One hundred of the proceeds benefit local students through school field trips.” Full Story

Heart Association notes year’s top research for heart disease and stroke
Among the top research in heart disease and stroke from the past year are studies that look at the importance of managing such behaviors as obesity and smoking to reduce health risks, as well as promising new medications and basic science advances, according to Clyde W.
