Nov. 30 Shell Point Academy class studies history of Uncommon Friends Foundation

The public is invited to attend a presentation about the Uncommon Friends Foundation sponsored by The Academy at Shell Point Retirement Community. The seminar will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30, in the Grand Cypress Room, located in The Woodlands Commons at Shell Point. The scheduled presenter is Arlene Roth, executive director of the Uncommon Friends Foundation.

“The Uncommon Friends Foundation has been operating since 1993 and has had a positive impact on our youth and business leaders in the Southwest Florida community,” said Teri Kollath, manager of The Academy and Volunteer Services.

Ms. Roth will share a brief history about the time the uncommon friends, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, Alexis Carrel and Charles Lindbergh, spent time together in Fort Myers. She will also discuss the founding of the foundation and its effect on the community. The Uncommon Friends Foundation is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to lifelong character building among today’s youth and business leaders.

Shell Point Retirement Community was honored to receive the Fourth Annual Uncommon Friends Foundation Business Ethics Award in 2009.

The Academy at Shell Point is a lifelong learning educational initiative for the residents of the retirement community. Every year, The Academy provides a well-rounded curriculum of educational opportunities for senior adults. Anywhere from 70 to 90 classes take place per trimester. The Academy at Shell Point was also named as one of 2008’s most innovative active aging programs by the International Council on Active Aging, an association that supports professionals who develop wellness/ fitness facilities and services for age 50-plus adults.

This event is free and open to the public; however, RSVPs are required since space is limited. For more information, call Sue Earnhardt at 454-2054.
