LMHS announces lecture series

Lee Memorial Health System’s annual Well Informed health lecture series kicks off with the advances in endovascular surgery from 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, at Hyatt Place Coconut Point, located at the Coconut Point mall.

Southwest Florida has become ground zero in the battle to reverse the devastating numbers of stroke victims in the U.S. Stroke is the third-leading cause of death and the number one cause of long-term disability in the U.S., An estimated 795,000 people will experience a new stroke or a recurrent stroke in 2009.

Enter Eric Eskioglu, M.D., and Brian Mason, M.D., partners with Cerebrovascular Specialists of Florida, who have dedicated their practice exclusively to understanding the brain and vascular disorders that may eventually lead to strokes and other life-threatening diseases.

“For decades treatment for brain aneurysms and vascular disorders has been cloaked in mystery and little progress has been made due to the perceived complexity of dealing with the brain,” says Dr. Eskioglu. “We had to wait for technology to catch up to help unlock some of the mystery and allow us to begin developing less invasive and more proactive treatments.”

ESKIOGLU ESKIOGLU Today, Dr. Eskioglu and Dr. Mason are in the forefront of using lessinvasive

endovascular surgical treatments to address brain aneurysms and vascular disorders in patients. Their practice has been selected to participate in seven clinical trials for the treatment of cerebrovascular disorders including the ONYX procedure, a minimally invasive treatment for brain aneurysms using a puttylike substance to fill the aneurysm to prevent it from rupturing, as well as the Wingspan brain stent, which is a mesh-type stent inserted into a blocked artery in the brain to open it up, support the artery from further damage, and restore blood flow to the brain.

MASON MASON These and other groundbreaking treatments will be discussed at a free seminar presented by Lee Memorial Health System. Reservations are requested. Call 936-5750.
