“Monsieur Verdoux” Nov. 20-21, 7 p.m.

Nominated for the 1948 Academy Award for Best Screenplay, and originating from a true story, this self– described “comedy of murders” was based on an idea by Orson Welles, which Chaplin reportedly bought for $5,000 in a refusal to be directed by anyone but himself. “Verdoux” stars Chaplin as the moustachioed bluebeard in beret and cravat whose charming manners and good looks cloak a deep– seated, murderous hatred, festering since the loss of his long–standing job as a bank clerk.

Set in the mid–west of Ireland, “GARAGE” tells the story of harmless misfit Josie, the lonely but optimistic caretaker of a crumbling petrol station. Over the course of a summer, Josie’s world shifts. A teenager, David, comes to work with him. They open up to each other and Carmel, from the local shop, stirs feelings within him that he struggles to name. Then one thoughtless moment unravels the threads of faltering friendship. Events spiral. Josie’s life is changed, forever.

“L’Iceberg” April 16-17, 7p.m.

Fiona is the manager of a fast–food restaurant. She lives with her family in the suburbs. In a few words, Fiona is happy… till one day…Fiona gets accidentally locked into a walk–in fridge while closing up. She gets out in the morning, half frozen and barely alive, only to realize that her husband and two children didn’t even notice she was missing. Little by little, Fiona develops an obsession for everything cold and icy: snow, polar bears, fridges, icebergs… and one day she drops everything, climb into a frozen goods delivery truck and leaves home. She wants to see a real iceberg.

YOUTH THEATER PRODUCTIONS “Fiddler on the Roof” May 6-8, 13-15, 7 p.m. Matinees May 8 and 15, 2 p.m.

“Fiddler On The Roof” has touched audiences around the world with its humor, warmth and honesty. Its universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness.

DANCE Dance Alliance Hosts Valerie Green/Dance Entropy Jan. 30, 8 p.m. and Jan. 31, 2 p.m.

Dance Entropy is a modern dance company founded in 1998 that abstracts the potential chaos of the body and creates order through expressive movement reflecting the world within which we live. The group from New York is hosted by Dance Alliance, the resident dance company of the Alliance for the Arts who will also perform new repertoire.

Dance Alliance Season Concert Feb. 27, 8 p.m. and Feb. 28, 2 p.m.

The resident dance company of the Alliance for the Arts will perform its annual season concert displaying new works created by local movementartists. Featured pieces will celebrate works and the spirit of Cynthia Arenillas, choreographer, teacher and dancer of Merce Cunningham and Paul Taylor Dance Companies.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES AND FESTIVALS GreenMarket Saturdays, 8 a.m. - noon

Go Green at the Alliance! Shop from a selection of locally grown fruits and vegetables, freshly caught fish, hydroponically grown produce, organic eggs, natural honey products, freshly baked breads, pastries, salsa, handmade soaps and bath salts, native plants and live orchids, jellies and chutneys, potpourri, tie–dye clothing, pottery and much more.

Walk Through the Arts Nov. 21, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Showcasing the artists, teachers, musicians, performers, cultural organizations and youth programs that make Lee County a vibrant arts and cultural destination for residents and visitors. Observe artists demonstrating their talent, watch mini–performances and listen to live music

Israel Festival March 7, noon-5 p.m.

A celebration of Israel’s Independence Day with an afternoon of live entertainment, ethnic Israeli delicacies, and vendors from around the U.S. and Israel selling Israeli jewelry and other products. Fantasy & Fairytales in Books & Art March 18, 4-6 p.m.

Storytelling, Book Art, Puppeteering and More. Children will participate in an interactive afternoon event of educational and literacy based entertainment. Don’t forget to dress up. Event partnership with The Reading Festival of Southwest Florida.

Young Artists Awards Seminar April 17, 1-3 p.m.

A free event that allows students to talk to experts and educators in the performing arts industry.

SPECIAL EVENTS AND FUNDRAISERS Bruce Gora – A Night to Remember Dec. 5, 7-10 p.m.

Musician. Photographer. Architect. Community volunteer. The Alliance for the Arts will be celebrating the life of Bruce Gora at an event hosted by his friends and family. Bruce Gora: A Night to Remember will feature Mr. Gora’s photography, architectural and community accomplishments, as well as live music, artist contributions, and culinary delights. Young Artists Awards Auditions: Jan. 23 and 30, hosted by the Alliance for the Arts

The Young Artists Awards is a performing arts education, audition, performance, and scholarship program for area students ages 8 to 21.
