Retina Health Center offers genetic test to determine macular degeneration risk

Retina Health Center is now offering a genetic test to determine a patient's risk of developing age-related macular degeneration.

Researchers have identified a number of genetic markers that can predict the risk of an individual developing vision loss from advanced AMD. The saliva test, marketed by Canadian-based ArcticDX, tests for many of the risk genes.

"Early detection and treatment are critical in AMD patients," said Dr. Alexander Eaton, owner of Retina Health Center. "This new test allows us to closely monitor patients who have a higher likelihood of developing the disease due to a family history or other risk factors."

This test is being offered on an introductory basis for $399 in Retina Health Center's Fort Myers and Naples offices and can be done independently or as part of an overall macular degeneration evaluation. For more information, call 337-3337 in Fort Myers or (239) 793-5200 in Naples.
