What's in a name? Wind and rain

Every year since 1953, the National Hurricane Center has generated an alphabetical list of names for the season's tropical storms and hurricanes. At first, the lists consisted of only female names; since 1979, the names alternate between male and female.

There are six lists that continue to rotate, changing only when there is a hurricane so devastating that its name is retired.
