Schimmel carvings highly prized by collectors
In the 1950s, America's best-known folkart wood-carver was Wilhelm Schimmel of Cumberland Valley, Pa. A carved eagle by this man was the dream of many a collector. His pieces, even then, went for thousands of dollars, and of course each was one of a kind. Schimmel (1817-1890) was born in Germany and immigrated to Pennsylvania after the Civil War. Full Story

Lack of transportation is one of the biggest challenges many cancer patients face, and the American Cancer Society needs more volunteers willing to help patients get to treatment. State park announces temporary closure of Lovers Key boat ramp
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Lovers Key State Park will temporarily close the park's boat ramp beginning Wednesday, May 27. Advance Solar unveils largest photovoltaic electric system
LTC Global Insurance and Advance Solar of Fort Myers have joined forces to create the largest privately owned photovoltaic electric system in Southwest Florida at LTC Global's headquarters at 6201 Presidential Court in Fort Myers. The system will produce about $5,000 worth of fossil-fuel-free electricity from the sun each year. Full Story
Annual food drive brings in more than 300,000 pounds for agency
Hard work by both paid and volunteer workers brought in more than the 300,000 pounds of food that the Harry Chapin Food Bank needed this year. The combined 350 Fort Myers/ Cape Coral letter carriers and 350 Harry Chapin Food Bank and postal volunteers brought in at least 305,000 pounds of food during the May 9 National Association of Letter Carriers food drive. Physicians warn that ATVs, kids can be a dangerous combination
All-terrain vehicles and kids can be a dangerous mix, especially for those who tend to treat the ATVs like toys instead of high-powered vehicles.
