Stamp Out Hunger food drive May 9
The "Stamp Out Hunger" will be held on Saturday, May 9. The U.S. Postal Service is supporting the National Association of Letter Carriers food drive in Fort Myers and Cape Coral in cooperation with the Harry Chapin Food Bank.
With current economic conditions, even more area citizens are struggling to provide the essentials for their families. This drive is especially important this year to those who have lost their jobs in this economy and to the millions more who face economic uncertainty. Over the past few months, more and more people are turning to food banks for assistance.
The Campbell Soup Company has been the principal corporate supporter for the NALC National Food Drive since 1997. Each year it prints postcards for delivery by letter carriers in the week before the food drive. Valpak Direct Marketing Systems also supports the food drive by featuring "Stamp Out Hunger" inserts in their mailings.
All postal customers need do is to place non-perishable food in unbreakable containers next to their mailbox before their letter carrier delivers mail on Saturday, May 9. The carrier and/or volunteers will do all the rest. The food is taken back to a postal station, sorted, and delivered to the Harry Chapin Food Bank.
Volunteers are needed to assist with the food drive. Individuals interested in volunteering should call 334-7007, ext. 32, or e-mail martahodson@harrychapinfoodbank. org.
The Harry Chapin Food Bank solicits, collects and stores quality food for distribution to needy people through a network of local nonprofit agencies in Lee, Collier, Hendry, Charlotte and Glades counties. It provides food to nonprofit agencies that serve 20,000 people monthly. The Harry Chapin Food Bank distributes more than 4.25 million pounds of food and other grocery products, valued at more than $7 million, per year.
