Be aware of new scam

"This is Craig from the church."

That is how the caller starts out his conversation. He has been described as a very polite young man who says he is calling from "the church" and that they are in the middle of updating their database and need to know if you are available to meet to sign a document that allows "the church" to update your information.

"This all sounds innocent, but it is not true and everyone needs to take a few moments to check out what is said before agreeing to anything or giving out any information," said Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott.

Remember a con-artist is willing to say anything to gain your trust and will even invoke the name of God to reach his or her goal of taking your money or getting your private information.

Before giving out any information or agreeing to meet with anyone check out their story. If they claim to be from your church or house of worship then call the office to confirm their story.

Never let anyone inside your home unless you know them.

Talk to your friends and neighbors about suspicious calls, visits, letters and e-mails you receive. You just might keep someone else from becoming a victim of one of these unscrupulous con-artists.

If you receive a call, letter, e-mail or a visit from someone and you are not sure if it is a scam, call the Lee County Sheriff's Office Fraud Line at 477-1242.
