FDOT's travel information system provides up-to-the-minute updates

As hundreds of thousands of baseball fans travel throughout the Sunshine State for 2009 Major League Baseball's Spring Training, the Florida Department of Transportation reminds fans to stay safe and avoid traffic by calling its free 511 Travel Information System.

"We encourage travelers to call 511 or visit the Web site before getting in the car," said Sgt. Kim Miller of the Florida Highway Patrol. "511 is a great tool to avoid traffic on the way to one of the games and every day during your daily commute."

Fans traveling on any of Florida's interstate highways, including Florida's Turnpike, can call 511 at any time for real-time roadway information on incidents, travel times, lane closures and other conditions. The free 511 system is also accessible by visiting www. FL511.com.

The 511 resource is free, however cell phone minutes apply. Following these safety tips will make your travel easier:

• Call 511 before you hit the road, at a rest area or have a passenger call to avoid talking while driving.

• Call 511 before you enter a new roadway to become aware of the current road condition.

• Customize your trip before you leave home at www.FL511.com to minimize time spent on the phone.

• Drive slowly and keep your lights on in low visibility.

• Always wear a seat belt. • Don't drink and drive.
