Estero Fire Rescue adds four-legged member
COURTESY PHOTO Ember, the newest member of Estero Fire Rescue. Estero Fire Rescue has a new member — and she is only 3½ months old. Ember, a Dalmatian, joined the department one month ago and has already made a big impact. She has visited schools, community events and has participated in the Coconut Point Mall Holiday Parade. Ember will be trained to perform acts that will help the fire department educate the public on fire and life safety issues, such as checking the batteries in smoke alarms and crawling low under smoke. Additionally, she will act as ambassador for the department and will bring a sense of tradition to the department.
Dalmatians have long been associated with fire departments due to their long history as carriage dogs. Back in the days of horse-drawn fire carts, the dogs acted as companions for the horses and guardians of the team as well as the equipments they pulled. They were used to clear a path and guide the firefighters and the team to fire. They were even known to find victims in burning buildings.
Today, many Dalmatians serve as firehouse mascots and are always recognized for their signature spotted coat.
