'Tis the season of holiday giving, and nonprofits need support now more than ever

GIVING
BY ANNE DOUGLAS Director of Programs, Southwest Florida Community Foundation

I know it doesn't come as a surprise to anyone that many of our nonprofit agencies are really struggling to keep their heads above water during these tough economic times. As I have mentioned in previous articles, the demand for services is increasing dramatically while at the same time donations for many organizations are decreasing.

This is especially true for the social-service agencies that are the safety net for the low-income, disadvantaged individuals and families most impacted by the recession. Many of these nonprofits are finding that their state and local government funding is being cut, and they are seeing donations from individuals slow as well. And, for many, the holidays are the most important time for fundraising to meet their operating expenses, which is why holiday giving is so critical.

So, what are the community needs that are exhausting the resources of many of our local nonprofits? Without mentioning specific organizations by name, here are some of the dynamics we are seeing across the region:

. Food pantries are seeing a significant increase in the number of families asking for assistance, as much as a 30 percent to 40 percent increase in some cases. They are seeing new clients they have never seen before, some of whom used to be their donors and volunteers. However, due to a job loss and/or a home being in foreclosure, they now cannot make ends meet.

. More women are seeking shelter for themselves and their children after fleeing abusive spouses or boyfriends, and they are in need of counseling, housing, and employment to support their families.

. Homelessness is on the rise as people lose their jobs and can no longer afford to stay in their homes, and we also see an increased need for mental health services as financial stress exacerbates or leads to mental disorders and/or substance abuse.

. A housing organization assisting

homeowners at risk of foreclosure reports that appointments have been booked through January and there is a waiting list of almost 80 individuals.

. Agencies providing Christmas gifts to low-income families are seeing a 30 to 40 percent increase in applications for assistance.

In the face of these daunting challenges, one might expect the staff and volunteers of area nonprofits to feel overwhelmed and discouraged. However, as I meet and talk with representatives of many of these agencies, I am impressed by their level of commitment and dedication to their work and the clients they serve. They recognize that they are the safety net and lifeline for many needy individuals and families who would otherwise fall through the cracks. These staff and volunteers who work tirelessly on behalf of their clients should be viewed as heroes, and we need to thank them for their continued dedication even in the face of longer hours, reduced staff support, and fewer community resources for their clients.

For this reason, it's my hope that even though you may have less to give this year, you will consider opening up your wallets and making a donation to the charity of your choice at a level you are comfortable with in light of your own financial situation. Even if you feel like your donation won't have an impact, please remember that donations add up, and with enough individual donations these nonprofits will hopefully be able to meet the increased demand for services and not have to cut staff and programs. This financial crisis affects all of us, and, for all you know, a local nonprofit may be helping one of your neighbors feed and clothe his/her children, pay the electric bill, and find a new job after being laid off.

The Southwest Florida Community Foundation has been supporting the communities of Lee, Charlotte, Collier, Glades and Hendry counties through endowed funds for nearly 32 years, and during that time has provided more than $30 million in grants and scholarships.
