Cancer Society seeks volunteer drivers
The American Cancer Society's South Gulf Coast Area is recruiting volunteer drivers to help cancer patients on their road to recovery.
Road to Recovery is an American Cancer Society program that strives to improve the quality of life for patients undergoing cancer care by providing transportation to their treatment appointments and home again. Transportation is provided according to the needs and available resources in the community.
Road to Recovery is faced with the classic supply and demand problem — increasing demand with decreasing supply. The movement toward outpatient treatment and away from hospitalization has contributed to an increased demand for transportation services, while the rising cost of fuel for volunteers has contributed to challenges recruiting and training volunteers.
Volunteers have an opportunity to be very flexible with their schedules and may select driving times that are convenient for them. Drivers should have a good driving record, a valid driver's license, automobile insurance, and a vehicle in good working condition.
Training is provided, with the next session on Jan. 13, at 10 a.m. at the American Cancer Society, 4575 Via Royale.
