HAPPENINGS AT BIG ARTS
Johnson and Jennings DUKES of Dixieland on stage
New Orleans' own DUKES of Dixieland bring the sounds of The Big Easy back to Schein Performance Hall at BIG ARTS Saturday, Nov. 29, at 8 p.m.
DUKES of Dixieland blow traditional jazz and Dixieland into the 21st century, weaving strands of pop, gospel, and country with authentic New Orleans sounds. More than 32 years of tradition stand behind today's DUKES as they step forward with a sound that is bright and brassy or smooth and dark as cane syrup.
Wearing their jazz heritage proudly, the DUKES are the oldest continuing Dixieland jazz band. A popular favorite at BIG ARTS, they have also sold out such venues as The Hollywood Bowl, the Kennedy Center, and the Smithsonian.
Tickets are $36 floor and $41 loge. The DUKES of Dixieland concert Patron Sponsor is West Wind Inn.

Flutist Christina Jennings and pianist Lura Johnson are turning the traditional hierarchy of soloist and accompanist upside-down with performances that include solo works, transcriptions, and music of today. They will perform at BIG ARTS Phillips Gallery, Sunday, Nov. 23, at 3 p.m.
Classical Afternoons Patron Series Sponsors are Deborah and John LaGorce.

BIG ARTS began when a group of artists dreamed of a cultural center on the island. Activities were held in private homes until 1987 when a small cottage was donated and moved to its present location on Dunlop Road. An art gallery opened in the cottage and concerts were held in the garden under a tent. Due to the popularity of the programs, the organization quickly outgrew these facilities. Phillips Gallery opened in 1990 to be used as an art gallery, concert hall, and classroom. The classrooms, Schein Hall and garden were added in 1997.
The creative spirit, driving force, and hard work by volunteers have shaped BIG ARTS into the vibrant organization it is today.
