Pedrero is one of Spain's most important and innovative playwrights. The translator, Phyllis Zatlin, is a professor of Spanish and translation studies at Rutgers University. The dramas are: "A Night in the Subway/Una Noche En El Metro or Tonight We're Alone/ Solos Esta Noche," the tale of a woman trapped on a dark subway platform with a stranger; and "The Voucher/Resguardo Personal," about a couple and their beloved dog.
These plays and others originally written in Spanish have been translated for Estreno Plays, a series begun in 1992 that focuses on contemporary Spanish theater. Its editorial board includes directors and theater specialists from various universities.
Carla Grieve and Dee Betcher are coproducers.
Jerry Seiff is director and Betsy Greenfield assistant director of "A Night in the Subway/Una Noche En El Metro," in which the players are Elsa Cantoni ("Carmen") and Tony Fernando ("Jose'"). Beverly Canell directs and Dee Betcher assists in directing "The Voucher/Resguardo Personal," with Maria (Mauxy) Montalvo ("Marta") and John Medina ("Gonzalo"). Directors and casts are bi-lingual.
