New low-cost spay/neuter program available

Lee County has approved a new spay/neuter program for residents who need to have their pets sterilized. Owners will now be able to have their pets spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped for an affordable fee.

Lee County Animal Services recently hired Dr. Christopher Taylor, DVM, who, along with a part-time, contract veterinarian, will sterilize pets through the low-cost program in addition to those adopted from the shelter.

The sterilization fee will include vaccinations, Microchip ID, and a Lee County license. The new fees are: Female Dog (0 to 50 lbs.) .............. $100 Female Dog (51 to 100 lbs.) ........... $125 Female Dog (over 100 lbs.) ........... $150 Male Dog ............................................. $100 Female Cat ............................................ $75 Male Cat ................................................ $50

Pets of residents who provide documentation of receiving public assistance or unemployment are eligible for the low-cost community spay/neuter program outlined above at a cost of only $20 per pet.

Lee County Animal Services is implementing other programs aimed at reducing pet overpopulation, increasing adoptions, and providing affordable care for pets. Another of these new programs is the Community Pet Pantry, a project that provides free pet food for owners who are struggling economically and can no longer afford to purchase pet food.
