"Raucous" rock musical coming to Naples
"Hedwig and the Angry Inch," a wild and outrageous rock musical, comes to Naples in August to liven up the quiet summer scene. Rocky Horroresque in stature, raucous and raunchy, this show which The New York Times called "a phenomenon" will be presented at the Sugden Community Theatre in downtown Naples for three nights only, Aug. 15, 16 and 17.
"Hedwig and the Angry Inch," is presented and performed by several of the area's most popular talents. Julie Shaffer and John McKerrow are producing this internationally acclaimed show. It stars Michael McAvoy as Hedwig and Lucy Harris at Yitkhak, and is directed by Paul Graffy, choreographed by Meg Pryor, and musically directed by Julie Shaffer.
This most unusual rock musical was written by John Cameron Mitchell; music and lyrics are by Stephen Trask. The show has been garnering rave reviews since its 1998 opening in New York.
"A raucous, edgy and wildly-funny rock musical," wrote David Patrick Stearns in USA Today. The New York Times' Peter Marks hailed it as "magnetic and captivating," and Times critic Richard Zoglin said it was "the most exciting hard-rock score written for the theatre since, oh, maybe ever..."
"Hedwig and the Angry Inch," will be performed in the Tobye Studio at the Sugden Community Theatre, 701 5th Avenue South in downtown Naples. Tickets are $25 and may be obtained at the box office or by calling (239) 263-7990. A pre-show reception will be held each performance night at 7 p.m.; the show begins at 8 p.m. This show contains adult language and themes, and is not appropriate for children.
