Lee Mental Health Center, Inc., a private not-for-profit agency, today announced that it has received a $60,000 one-year grant from The Able Trust to initiate a Veterans Outreach Project to serve Lee County veterans with mental illnesses or substance abuse disorders who desire employment. Beware of con artist's phone calls
Lee County residents are receiving calls from a con-artist attempting to get their checking account numbers. The con-artist claims to be working with area banks to change all checking account numbers nationwide. When asked which banks, he names banks in our area. This is not true. Celebrity Golf Classic raises more than $655,000

Utility, street closures continue downtown
More work being done on parts of First Street
With nearly half of the Downtown Utility and Streetscape Improvements complete, progress on the remaining portion continues through the downtown "core" area. Construction continues on First Street with the addition of First Street from Heitman Street to Monroe Street in the "under construction" status. Rabid bat confirmed in Lee County
The Lee County Health Department has confirmed the presence of rabies in a local bat. The animal was found in the Whiskey Creek area last week, and testing confirmed rabies over the weekend. Rabies can be confirmed only through laboratory analysis. Full Story

Self-defense programs available
Lee Center for Rehabilitation & Wellness will hold a women's self-defense class from 9-11 a.m. on Thursday, May 8 in its conference room. The center is located at 2070 Carrell Road, Fort Myers. The class, "Self-Defense Awareness & Familiarization Exchange," will be taught by the Lee County Sheriff's Department and consist of a film, lecture and practical application. Full Story
Cruelty case dogs in need of new homes
Lee County Animal Services takes custody of 37 neglected dogs
Lee County Animal Services has been given custody of 37 dogs confiscated from their owners for severe neglect. The dogs' owners made the decision to surrendered legal custody of the dogs to Animal Services on May 1. The dogs were found to be living in extremely unsanitary conditions, exposed to toxic air quality levels, and suffering from a lack of medical care. Full Story
Gulf Coast Humane Society in need of Purina ONE pet food
Gulf Coast Humane Society announced that all dogs and cats housed in the Fort Myers shelter are now eating a consistent diet of Purina ONE brand Pet Food products only. The dietary transition began last week and is now complete. Full Story
