Fiddlesticks' tourney nets $580,000 for charities
In just six years, the Bobby Nichols- Fiddlesticks Charity Foundation has raised $1.942 million for children's charities. This year's Nichols Cup Celebrity Pro-Am tournament, held February 17-18 at Fiddlesticks Country Club, was the biggest yet. Full Story
Big Cypress Market Place makes list of places to visit
The state tourism bureau has named Big Cypress Market Place as one of 40 great places to visit in Florida. The Market Place was included in VisitFlorida's list of "Forty Ways to Play in Florida," published in the spring issue of Travel + Leisure Family and the April issue of Travel + Leisure magazines. 20th commencement set at FGCU Florida Gulf Coast University will stage the largest commencement exercise in its history this Spring, conferring diplomas upon 925 graduates. The ceremony lasts about two and a half hours. FGCU President Wilson G. Bradshaw delivers the commencement address to graduates and an estimated 7,000 family members and guests. Full Story
Grants offer recovering women workplace training, new beds
Two grants worth a total of $17,900 have been awarded to Southwest Florida Addiction Services, to assist women recovering from substance abuse at its Transitional Living Center on Dixie Parkway in Fort Myers. Full Story
New college to host first open house April 24
Rasmussen College, new to Fort Myers, will host its first open house on Thursday, April 24 from 3 to 7 p.m. at its main campus at 9160 Forum Corporate Parkway, just east of interstate 75 and Colonial Boulevard. The new, 18,000 square foot campus will be open to the community for tours. Full Story
National Day of Prayer event May 1 in Estero
Christians gather at Estero Community Park on May 1 to honor the National Day of Prayer. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with music provided by the Summit Church band and praise team. The time of worship through prayer begins at 7 p.m. with the Presentation of Colors by the ROTC from Estero High School and the Pledge of Allegiance led by the local Brownie Troop. Full Story
Carlene Sharples named Volunteer of the Year
The American Red Cross of Lee County named Pine Island resident and long-time chapter volunteer Carlene Sharples with its annual Volunteer of the Year award at a recognition dinner. As the head of the chapter's disaster assessment team and a disaster action team leader, Sharples' contributions to the community have become immeasurable. Full Story
