Cat Power
MUSIC REVIEWED BY BOB JONES
Jukebox - Matador Records Chanteuse Chan Marshall aka Cat Power started her career as a very young lady and her performances were a as much freak show as concert due to a certain amount of instability, riddled with starts and stops, as well as the good possibility of a total meltdown onstage. As a more mature artist and performer she has embraced her vulnerability and has become a confident performer with appearances on Austin City Limits and concerts that have gained universal praise. Her recordings and songwriting have always been critically praised and Jukebox, her second album of mostly cover songs is no exception. This record is filled with sparsely arranged songs that highlight not only her beautiful voice but her distinct delivery style. It comes in two versions, one with a standard jewel box packaging and another with a cardboard (digi pack) two disc version with extra tracks. The double disc version is the one to go for, if only for her version of "She's Got You," the song that Patsy Cline made famous. Billie Holiday's "Don't Explain" is not for a faint of heart type of performer but Marshall manages to pull it off with style and grace. Also represented here are Hank Williams' "Ramblin'Man," Joni Mitchell's "Blue" and many others. Jukebox is a low key, tasteful, introspective record that is a true joy to listen to as well as sit back and sink into.
