Agencies join to combat wildfires: Drought conditions make area vulnerable
Representatives from several area emergency response organizations have formed a coalition with the goal of informing local residents of the dangers associated with wildfires and our current drought conditions.
This coalition is formed of various fire districts, Lee County Emergency Management, the Division of Forestry, the American Red Cross of Lee County and Catholic Charities. At the first meeting the group shared preparedness tips and information.
"We are experiencing one of the driest seasons in recent history," the Division of Forestry's Gerry LaCavera said. "Lehigh Acres and North Fort Myers are two of the areas where wildfires can occur."
Below are a few wildfire safety tips discussed at the meeting:
• Be sure that your home is prepared for wildfire safety. Don't invite wildfire home. Keep the area within 30 feet of your home mowed and clear of brush and debris. Remove all leaves, pine needles, small twigs - anything that will burn - from your roofs and gutters. Remove vines that may bring a wildfire from heavy vegetation to your home.
• Make sure that fire vehicles can reach your home. Clearly mark all driveway entrances and display your name and address. Contact your local fire department, health department or forestry office for information on fire laws.
• Report any suspicious activity to the Arson Alert Hotline (800) 342-5869.
• Teach children about fire safety. Keep matches and lighters out of their reach.
• Post fire emergency telephone numbers.
• Plan several escape routes away from your home by car and by foot.
• People start most wildfires. Be careful anytime you use anything with a flame or that can cause sparks. Find out how you can promote and practice wildfire safety at the Florida Division of Forestry website: www. fl-dof.com.
• Talk to your neighbors about wildfire safety. Plan how the neighborhood could work together after a wildfire. Make a list of your neighbors' skills, such as medical or technical. Consider how you could help neighbors who have special needs, such as elderly or disabled persons. Make plans to take care of children who may be on their own if parents can't get home.
