Moonlight and Magnolias - Stage 88 Community Theatre presents "Moonlight and Magnolias" at the Bonita Springs Community Hall through March 8 . Material Spirits - Theatre Conspiracy, a Southwest Florida theatre company opens a brand new theatre space on Feb. 21 with the performance of "Material Spirits." Under the direction of Artist Director Bill Taylor, The comedy revolves around a newly divorced woman whose mother and step-mother have very different and spirited views about her future and love life. The show stars Betty Madonna, Pat Clopton, Annie Wagner and Jesse St. Louis. "Material Spirits" won first place in Theatre Conspiracy's tenth annual new play contest, The Palm Springs International Playwriting Festival and the Ashland (Oregon) New Plays Festival. Anything Goes - Cole Porter's hit musical "Anything Goes" sets sail at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre beginning Thursday, Feb. 21. The fun filled trip aboard the SS American is packed with Porter classics, lively tap dancing and a boatload of laughs. "Anything Goes" runs through April 5. The Goat…or who is Sylvia? - The Naples Players are running the award-winning Edward Albee comedy/ drama, "The Goat...or Who is Sylvia?" through March 1 at the Sugden Community Theatre in Naples. Albee's play won the 2002 Tony Award as well as a Pulitzer Prize. Reviewers have called "The Goat..." funny, shocking, disturbing, sad and tragic. And also, very literate and entertaining." This avant-guard, cutting edge production is not for everyone. "The Goat..." takes a controversial look at how we treat those who are outside the norm. Living Blog - "The Living Blog," a new play written, designed, and directed by Barry Cavin, Chairman of the Department of Visual and Performing at Florida Gulf Coast University, is on stage at the Theatre Lab on the campus of FGCU. The play runs Wednesday, Feb. 20 through Saturday, Feb. 23 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. FGCU's experimental production puts a contemporary spin on the idea of performing news accounts by appropriating the current equivalent of the vital press…the blog. This multi-media, multilayered performance will take its material from a blogosphere created by the author and other contributors throughout cyberspace. The result will be a five-act play (Scandal, Election, War, Environment, and Apocalypse) with each act corresponding to a blog. Lecture - Woody Hanson, grandson of the "White Medicine Man," W. Stanley Hanson, will hold a special talk back presentation on 6 p.m. at the Alliance for the Arts. The exhibit, "Florida's Seminole Indians: A Journey with the White Medicine Man" is on display through Feb. 29. W. Stanley Hanson, known as the "White Medicine Man" of the Seminole Indians, was born in 1883, in Key West. When still an infant in his mother's arms, he and his family moved to Fort Myers, then a primitive little village of only a few hundred inhabitants. Hanson's father, Dr. William Hanson, and his mother, Julia Allen Hanson, were descended from old and established lines of English ancestry. Dr. Hanson, a graduate of Edinburgh, was one of the first practicing physicians in this area. His patients included the elderly, Tom Edison and occasional Seminole Indians, with whom his son made acquaintance. Stanley's playmates included the children of the Seminole Indian patients and later he would accompany his father into the wilds of the Everglades to provide medical care to the Indians. As a young man he knew them all by name, knew their language, understood them and loved them.
Lecture - "Tinkering with Eden, a Natural History of Exotics in America," by Kim Todd tells the stories of non-native species and how they arrived in the United States. Species covered range from pigeons, brought over by some of the earliest colonists, to starlings, imported by a man who wanted to bring all the birds mentioned in Shakespeare to Central Park. Ding Darling Refuge Reads will discuss the book at 10 a.m., in the refuge Education Center. Admission is free. History - One of the greatest anthropological finds in history, "LUCY: The Story of Human Origins" spans 50 million years in scope, from the early primates to the dawn of humanity. Call to artists - The Naples Art Association at The von Liebig Art Center in Naples, Florida, invites artists residing in the State of Florida to submit up to three entries of current work (created after January 1, 2006) in any media for ART ENCOUNTER 2008. The fine art and contemporary craft exhibition will be installed in the art center's six galleries from May 10 to June 29. At least $3,000 in cash awards will be presented to artists during the Members' Preview Reception and Awards Presentation on May 9. Works appearing in the exhibition as well as the award winners will be selected by guest juror Brian Dursum, director and chief curator of the Lowe Museum of Art at the University of Miami in Coral Gables. Art - An exhibit of William North oil paintings completed in 2007 during the artist's term as "resident artist" at Delnor- Wiggins Pass State Park, Naples, will be held Saturday, March 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Paintings will include views of Wiggins Pass and the beach, with an emphasis on morning shadow patterns on the sand. Space 39 in downtown Fort Myers will hold an opening reception for "Women's Work: Feminist Art from a Man's Perspective" on Saturday, March 22 from 6-10 p.m. The issues of the Feminist Art movement are re-examined and re-interpreted from the point of view of a single dad. Artist
Jeffrey Scott Lewis uses acrylic paint and canvas to create collages that are inspired by the Quilts of Gees Bend. Using color, line and texture, the artist questions traditional gender-based roles and responsibilities. The abstract works are given titles that suggest the issues a stay at home mom faces in raising children, keeping a home and maintaining relationships.
Film - The annual Jewish Film Festival of Southwest Florida will be offering more films on more screens than ever before. The festival, sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Lee and Charlotte Counties, kicks off on Sunday, March 9, with an exciting double feature - "Sallah Shabati" and "The Impossible Spy" - at the Regal Bell Tower Cinemas beginning at 2 p.m. It continues on Wednesday, March 12, with "The Rape of Europa," which airs at 7 p.m. at the Regal Bell Tower Cinemas. Art - Ursula Cappelletti, Bettina Edwards, Martha Graham and Angelika Kade are featured in the latest BIG ARTS exhibit opening March 5 and running through March 31 in Founders Gallery. Art - The 32nd Sanibel-Captiva Art League Juried Exhibit attracts artists from Charlotte County to Naples and is open to the 4,000 members of the Art Council of Southwest Florida. BIG ARTS Phillips Gallery will host the exhibit from March 6 - 31, at 900 Dunlop Road, Sanibel. Realistic and abstract work in oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, charcoal, ink and printmaking will be showcased. Art - The 13th annual Artists' Studio Tour, presented by the Friends of Art at the Naples Museum of Art, will present a delicious feast of fine art - along with food and conversation - featuring the work of eight internationally recognized artists. The tour includes visits to the artists' homes and studios and will be held over two days - Sunday, March 2, from 1 to 5 p.m., and Monday, March 3, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $40 for Sunday (includes refreshments) and $50 for Monday (includes lunch).
