mental health care in crisis

S tate funding for mental health in Lee County hasn't increased in nearly six years while the population has grown by double digits. The meager resources available are so stretched that county residents with mental illnesses are placed in non-psychiatric hospital beds (at a cost of about $2 million annually), sent to jail or are left homeless. Recalled toys make parents extra careful

In the mad rush of the holiday season, starting with Black Friday, parents and relatives continue to check toy labels for "Made in China." Recently toys made in China have been recalled for containing lead paint, magnetic parts and GHB, the date rape drug, of all things. Full Story

Cape doctor opens heart care group

A Cape Coral cardiologist is hoping to change the way residents on the west side of Lee County view health care. "It is a bedroom community," said Dr. Louis Scala, a cardiologist who opened a practice in July. "Everybody is being shipped to Fort Myers. Full Story

Grant to focus on cutting tobacco use
Nearly 28 percent of high school students in Lee are using tobacco

The Lee County Health Department and the Lee County Coalition for a Drug Free Southwest Florida will spend the next three years trying to cut down on tobacco use locally, thanks to a $580,000 grant from the state Department of Health. Full Story

Deceased Vietnam veteran honored at construction site

Three days after Veteran's Day, Thursday, Nov. 15, at sunrise, the over 450 construction workers building the new Lee Memorial Health Systems hospital on Metro Parkway and Daniels Parkway stopped for a moment, after their morning stretching exercises, and listened as foreman Doc Holladay asked for their attention. Seasonal boating speed zones now in effect

Lee County Division of Natural Resources reminds area boaters to heed the seasonal changes in several speed zones in Lee County that went into effect last week. Areas throughout the county including Estero Bay and St. James City, will experience changes in the posted speed zones. These changes can be a reduction in speed or an increase in speed. Full Story

Congress Jewelers' Southwest Florida locations will serve as collection sites for toys and gifts for area children as part of this year's Giving Tree program. Run by Voices for Kids, in support of its Guardian ad Litem program, Giving Tree provides gifts for children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect or abandonment. Full Story
