Memorial to honor slain officers
The front of the Fort Myers Police Department on Peck Street is about to be enlivened by a "Fallen Officer Memorial," designed by Fort Myers High students in the school's industrial design department. The project faced numerous delays, everything from a rough hurricane season to faulty blueprints, said Major Glen Johnson, who is assigned to manage the project. Full Story
New brain surgery technique will assist area patients
Southwest Florida patients diagnosed with certain types of aneurysms no longer have to drive to Miami or Orlando for brain surgery, thanks to a technique that is being used at HealthPark Medical Center. HealthPark, part of the Lee Memorial Health System, is only one of two hospitals in the United States doing the procedure. Full Story
Flu shots available at Lee County Health Department
Flu shots are now available at the Lee County Health Department at 3920 Michigan Avenue in Fort Myers. Hours are 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Medicare will pay for influenza vaccine shots. For those without Medicare, the cost is $25. Pneumonia shots are also available for $35. Full Story

Canterbury School is offering need-based merit scholarships to area fifth and eighth grade students entering Canterbury's sixth or ninth grades for the 2008/2009 school year. Each scholarship is for 50 percent of tuition through the twelfth grade year of high school. Full Story
"Drive to Hawaii" golf tourney aids cancer victims
The Mercedes Benz of Fort Myers Lee Memorial Health System Foundation Golf Tournament "Drive to Hawaii" will be held Monday, Nov. 11 at Verandah Golf Club's Old Orange Course. The event benefits Lee Cancer Care - helping those in our community who are suffering with cancer. Registration is at 8 a.m. and the shotgun starts is at 9. Full Story
Edison College updating campus plan
Edison College is in the process of developing new master plans for the Charlotte, Collier and Lee campuses in preparation for future enrollment demands. The Southwest Florida Walk Now for Autism will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10 at the Estero Community Park, 9200 Corkscrew Palms Boulevard, Estero. Over 3,000 walkers are expected to attend. Full Story

Lee Memorial physicians earn national awards
Twenty-four Lee Memorial Health System physicians, including Dr. John Donaldson, chairman of the Lee Memorial board of directors, were honored recently as Best Doctors in America 2007-2008 by Best Doctors, Inc. Kayak/Canoe trail extended up Caloosahatchee
Great Calusa Blueway now boasts nearly 200 miles of scenic paddling
Lee County opened the third leg of the Great Calusa Blueway Paddling Trail last week. The addition will introduce paddlers to the Caloosahatchee River's creeks and its meandering waters. The trail, managed and marketed in a joint effort by Lee County Parks & Recreation and the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau, has now nearly doubled in size to 190 miles. Full Story
