Tomato pickers in Immokalee are among the lowest paid workers in the nation, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Workers toil in area fields collecting tomatoes in buckets that weigh about 32 pounds when full. A recent report by AeA, the nation's largest trade association representing all segments of the high-tech industry, shows that Lee County added 200 net jobs in 2005, the most current metropolitan data available, making it the state's 9th largest technology hub, with a total of 4,400 jobs. Developer Jim Wallace wanted to create a community rich in culture. The founder and CEO of Wallace Homes is doing just that with the development of the Art District at Rapallo in Estero. Pace of Lee home permits remains slow
During September, Lee County Community Development issued 76 permits for single-family homes to be built in unincorporated Lee County, Bonita Springs and Fort Myers Beach. Residential permits were valued at $28.4 million. There were 63 permits issued in August and 458 issued in September 2006. Full Story
