The Southwest Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra led by conductor Michael Simpson, honors area music educators at its first concerts of the 2007-08 season.

"Awesome! A Season Premiere

Honoring Music Educators" will take place on Sunday Oct. 14 at Mariner High School, 701 Chiquita Blvd., Cape Coral at 4 pm. The Sinfonietta, which features the younger strings players, will also perform.

To showcase the talents of the young musicians, music was chosen by student selection and includes the third movement of "Karelia Suite" by Jean Sibelius, Rossini's overture to the "Barber of Seville" and John Williams "Some of the Heros."

"This music is not only inspiring but fun to perform. The students especially enjoy the fun rhythms and beautiful melodies of the Sibelius piece," Simpson said.

The Youth Orchestra is an auditioned group comprised of the best young musicians in a three county area. An important outreach activity of the Southwest Florida Symphony, it provides quality symphonic training and performance experience for young musicians. They are coached by Symphony musicians, rehearse weekly and perform during many Symphony events and in their own series. The Youth Orchestra also features the Sinfonietta, the youngest string players, coached by Nanette Grant.
