Hospital employees earn awards
Lee Memorial Health System announced this year's recipients of the Doc Coggins Award of Excellence. Twelve award winners were selected from the system's hospitals, outpatient centers, physician offices and ancillary services. The selections are based upon the employee's demonstrated commitment to the hospital system goals of quality, service, community, people and finance. Full Story
Bonita Springs gets parish nurse program
Bonita Springs residents living near Old US 41 will have a new option for seeking health screenings, prevention, and education. Thanks to a grant from the Bonita Springs Assistance Office, a part-time parish nurse is being hired and will be placed at Hope Lutheran Church and the Amigos Center off old US 41 in Bonita Springs. Robert Smith was driving to his Hiram, Ga., home in 2004 when his car flipped off a 13-foot embankment and wrapped around a tree. Smith, who was partially ejected, was unconscious when paramedics pulled him from the wreckage, and doctors would later tell his wife that the prognosis wasn't good - if he survived, he'd likely be in a vegetative state. Emory neurobiologist Donald Stein has been researching progesterone's effects on the brain in animals for 20 years. His work laid the foundation for the clinical trial.
