J.J. Cale
Rewind: The Unreleased Recordings
MUSIC REVIEWED BY BOB JONES
Rewind: The Unreleased Recordings - Time Life Records Tulsa
Oklahoma native J.J. Cale wrote "Cocaine" and "After Midnight" that Eric Clapton
had hits with as well as "They Call Me The Breeze" that Lynyrd Skynyrd adopted
as their own. Cale could pull up a plate of eggs next to you at the counter of
Mel's Diner and you wouldn't know him from Adam. Somehow I don't think that
troubles him too much. Rewind: The Unreleased Recordings is a collection of
songs that have been in the vault for years collecting dust. Recorded between
1973 and 1983, it doesn't have the feel of a record consisting of scraps and
pieces. The songs are polished and better than what many contemporary
songwriters have to offer. Cale's vocal, guitar and songwriting style have been
a huge influence over many musicians (there would be no Dire Straits if not for
the Cale Sound) from country, rock and blues. His almost whispered vocal style is very distinctive as is his similar guitar style, very tasty but not too flashy. Rewind: The Unreleased Recordings is a fine collection of songs from a classic period from the career of J.J, Cale who has quietly been making great musicians sound great since the early seventies. ¦
