The second Ben Harper record made me think of him as the American Non-Reggae reincarnation of Bob Marley. There was an anthem for the left-handed cigarette and many songs of empowerment, the way that I thought only Marley could pull off, but Harper pulled it all off with style and owned it. New art show at Sanibel library
Residents and visitors are welcome to see over 50 paintings at the Sanibel Public Library by members of Sanibel-Captiva Art League. Southwest Florida Symphony Choruses to Hold Auditions
The Southwest Florida Symphony Chorus, under the direction of Joseph Caulkins, will be holding auditions for open positions in the Symphony Chorus and new members in the Children's Chorus on Sept. 9, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Cypress Lake United Methodist Church. Fort Myers doles out arts grant money
The City of Fort Myers awarded $51,900 to 16 different art organizations and individuals last week. This is the sixth year the City has awarded grants to non-profit organizations. Since starting the Arts and Culture Grants program, the City has given nearly $300,000 to 71 individuals and organizations. Full Story

ARTS FOR ACT AUCTION GALA
Last week's 19th annual auction for the Abuse Counseling and Treatment Inc. at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Golf and Spa Resort drew more than 1,000 people. Organizers didn't have a final tabulation on the money raised by Florida Weekly's press time. Last year the art auction took in about $315,000 and this year the goal was $500,000. Full Story
