New art show at Sanibel library

Residents and visitors are welcome to see over 50 paintings at the Sanibel Public Library by members of Sanibel-Captiva Art League. The Art League began many years ago by a small group of artists who were dedicated to the enrichment of cultural and creative growth in the visual arts and have been showing their work in the library over 30 years.

The seasonal juried shows, critiques, individual member exhibits, interesting meeting programs and networking with other artists in the Southwest Florida Art Council provide a background for the encouragement and educational exposure many artists seek. Membership is not required to participate in most of the events throughout the year.

The Annual Art Clothesline Sale is very popular because the artists are able to "clean out their studios" and sell their unframed work. The work is priced low, starting at $5 with most under $75. These paintings at reduced prices are always a hit with tourists because they are inexpensive and easy to take with them.

Just as the population has grown so has the membership increased over the years. Academic background and professional experience in commercial and fine art varies among the artists. Many became active in the visual arts after retirement and are seasonal or vacationing visitors to our area. For more information about the current exhibit call 472- 2483. Library Hours are: Mon-Saturday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Closed on Sunday. For Art League information write to P.O. Box 1192, Sanibel, Fl. 33957. ¦
