F ifty years ago this month, in June of 1957, the Caloosahatchee River was born again, a convert of the human tide. Though few or none recognized it, in that month everything began to change. In May, Leonard and Jack Rosen scouted out and bought Redfish Point on the north bank of the Caloosahatchee, some 70 miles west of Lake Okeechobee. Full Story

Braille camps helping blind kids learn
In 1968, nearly half of all blind children learned to read and write Braille. Today, just six percent learn Braille. The other 94 percent of blind and low vision children remain illiterate the rest of their lives. That's why the Braille Institute of Florida applied for and won a state grant to conduct several Beginning Braille Summer Camps throughout southwest Florida. Full Story
Star Wars stamps available at Post Office
In conjunction with the 30th anniversary of the first Star Wars film, the U. S. Postal Service is issuing 41-cent, Star Wars commemorative stamps in 15 designs. The stamps are on sale nationwide. Image artwork is by longtime Star Wars poster artist Drew Struzan; the stamps were designed by Terrence McCaffrey and William J. Glicker, Jr., of the U.S. Postal Service. Full Story
Wine Fest names beneficiaries for 2007

After four years and more than $9 million, the restoration of the Edison Estate has been awarded statewide recognition for Outstanding Achievement in the field of Restoration and Rehabilitation from the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation at its annual conference held this year in Sarasota. Atlantis' liftoff earth shattering
The space shuttle Atlantis and its seven-member crew lifted off Friday from NASA's Kennedy Space Center on time to continue construction of the International Space Station. Herocare will service primarily Southwest Florida.
